Aung
Aung has sacrificed his dreams to avoid homelessness.
At 40 years-old, he has become vulnerable. Aung’s landlord is threatening to evict him. He needs to raise £4,616 to avoid the risk of becoming homeless. Aung’s shortfall was unforeseen. He planned to attain a degree in Computer Science and become a successful Web Designer. “I started my first year in 2020 but failed one of my exams in 2021. I had to resit an exam to continue my studies. As I was waiting to resit the exam, Student Finance stopped paying me and I was not eligible to apply for Universal Credit because I was a full-time student”.
Over the course of several months, Aung struggled to make his rent payments whilst continuing to study and without support from Student Finance. He decided to leave university in pursuit of full-time employment to maintain his living expenses but the amount of his rent arrears exceeds what he earns. Aung was able to reapply for Universal Credit to help support his housing costs. His rent is now fully covered by UC and is sustainable for the future, however, his arrears remain. He has a current repayment plan in place towards clearing his arrears, however his landlord is threatening to proceed with eviction unless his arrears are cleared in full.
Aung’s passion to become a Web Designer is inspiring and aspirational but the unambiguity of Aung’s situation is alarming. His short term goal to clear his arrears determines whether he will be able to achieve his long term goal. Aung needs to clear his arrears to sustain his current tenancy. “I have a flexible tenancy with Westminster Council, so if my case is taken to court, if I do not achieve this goal I could risk losing my home. This will make things difficult as I would have to deal with the issue of being homeless and trying to find somewhere to live.” Aung would struggle to find somewhere else to live that is affordable as his current tenancy is £444pcm. His UC payments will cover his costs but will not help him to clear his arrears.
Aung’s Support Worker: “Mr Aung is a determined and motivated individual, he is passionate about his future goals and has a clear plan on how he will achieve it. Although he is at risk of becoming homeless he is still determined and positive that he will secure his dream career. This money will be life changing for him”.
Aung needs to raise enough money to clear his rent arrears. His life chances depend on achieving this goal. Will you be a part of his success story? Help Aung get in control of his life.
Aung’s Next Steps
1. Raise money to pay off my rent arrears in full.
2. Secure a day time job to help maintain my rent payments and living expenses.
3. Return back to my studies and enrol at Birkbeck University on an evening course.
( This option is more flexible than returning to King’s university. This means that I can work in the day and attend classes in the evening.)
4. Secure a job as a Web Developer.
