Ravi

Ravi

Ravi is a young asylum seeker from Bangladesh. He was made homeless after his living situation broke down with his family. In November 2021, he came to the UK as a Law undergraduate. He needs your support to empower him to continue his studies, whilst his asylum support application is being reviewed.

Ravi’s mother was visiting the UK before Ravi arrived. She decided to stay as he does not have a support system here; however, she is very vulnerable and has had to rely on Ravi for financial support. For some time, Ravi was paying for her rent from his part-time job wages, leaving him with extremely limited income to support himself.

He has suffered from serious mental health disorders and needs support to manage his wellbeing. After a series of suicide attempts, he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and kept in hospital for a short period. When Ravi was discharged he became homeless. Fortunately the university offered to accommodate him until November 2022.

Whilst Ravi has applied for asylum support, the Home Office placed him in a hotel in Oxford. As he is studying at a London university, this has forced Ravi to commute back and forth from Oxford to attend his lectures. The hotel accommodation in Oxford is not only far from his university, but it’s far from his part-time job, as well as mental health support and family network.

Ravi is doing his best to manage the money that he makes but he has incurred a lot of debt with his sister, barely owns any belongings or warm changes of clothes. Ravi needs our support to attend university and stay warm through the cold UK winter.

Ravi’s Support Worker: “We are challenging this decision, but we are unsure when he will be moved back to London. In the meantime, he needs some money to travel into London to attend university, as well as to purchase a change of clothes.”

Ravi’s Next Steps

  1. Raise funds to commute to university
  2. Raise funds to purchase warm clothes
  3. Continue my part-time job
  4. Complete course modules for my law degree
